FIREFLY is proud to once again participate in the 2026 NOSM University Summer Studentship Program. This annual initiative provides an important opportunity to support emerging health-care professionals while highlighting the vital work our pediatric teams deliver across Northwestern Ontario. Through hands‑on learning in real clinical environments, students gain valuable experience that helps prepare them for future practice in northern and rural communities.

Approved FIREFLY Sites

Students may apply for placements across several FIREFLY locations, offering exposure to diverse communities and service needs. Approved sites for this year’s program include Atikokan, Dryden, Fort Frances, Kenora, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay.

These locations offer a meaningful blend of professional learning and northern lifestyle experiences. FIREFLY is an ideal choice for students who want to contribute to high‑impact pediatric care while enjoying the natural beauty of the region.

A variety of clinical and allied health opportunities are available for students seeking summer placements in all sites:

Supporting Tomorrow’s Workforce

At FIREFLY, our strength comes from the dedication and expertise of our staff. The NOSM Summer Studentship Program reflects our collective commitment to fostering growth, mentorship, and excellence in pediatric care. Each placement we support contributes to a stronger, more resilient health‑care system: one that reflects the needs, strengths, and spirit of the communities we serve.

Take a look below at what some of our previous students shared about their experience.

“The NOSM Summer Studentship at FIREFLY gave me a glimpse into my future by providing valuable hands-on experience I would not have gained in the classroom. I had the opportunity to work in a variety of roles across both developmental services and mental health and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support children and families. From travelling to surrounding communities to assisting in Complex Feeding and Swallowing Clinics to contributing to the LibBib project, I gained exposure to areas of pediatric care that expanded my perspective and skill set. Beyond the professional growth, this experience allowed me to build a deeper connection with my community and form lasting friendships and connections. It reinforced my passion for nutrition and my desire to work in a field that fosters collaboration and holistic care.” – Emma Manzie
