The goals of the Canada Prenatal and Nutrition program (CPNP) are to improve maternal-infant health, increase the rates of healthy birth weights, and to promote and support breastfeeding. The program also aims to promote the creation of partnerships within communities and strengthen community capacity to increase support for vulnerable pregnant women and new mothers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

CPNP helps support the needs of pregnant women facing challenges that put their health and the health of their infants at risk. These challenges include poverty, teen pregnancy, social and geographic isolation, substance use and family violence. CPNP also increases the availability of culturally sensitive prenatal support for Indigenous women and recent immigrants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Guiding Principles<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

While each CPNP project is unique, a set of six guiding principles help to unify the approach to program delivery:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

  • Mothers and babies first \u2014 the health and well-being of the mother and baby are most important in planning, developing and carrying out the program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
    • Equity and accessibility \u2014 the program must meet the social, cultural and language needs of the pregnant women in the community and must be available in all parts of the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
      • Community-based \u2014 decision making and action in planning, designing, operating and evaluating the program must be done as a community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
        • Strengthening and supporting families \u2014 all parts of society share the responsibility for children by supporting parents and families.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
          • Partnerships \u2014 partnerships and cooperative activities at the community level are the key to developing an effective program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>
            • Flexibility \u2014 the program must be flexible to respond to the different needs in each community and to the changing needs and conditions of women in these communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

              CPNP supports include nutrition counselling, prenatal vitamins, food and food coupons, counselling in prenatal health and lifestyle, breastfeeding education and support, food preparation training, education and support on infant care and child development, and referrals to other agencies and services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
